‘You should shower,’ he tells me, going through his things, his back turned.

I raise my brows. I guess I smell terrible again, especially with all the training we’ve been doing. So I don’t question him and grab a black dress, knitted cardigan, and panties from my bag.

It feels wrong to be washing the scent of him off me. I rub soap along my throat and collarbones, closing my eyes against the memory of what it felt like to have his tongue there.

Jeepers. What had happened with him? What had happened with me?

I’ve never felt like that before in my life. I’ve never wanted anything as much as I wanted him, in that moment.

I push the thoughts down and get out. Once I’m dressed, I leave the bathroom and Briggs quickly takes my place. I go to my overnight bag and pull out the pack of cigarettes, pocketing them in my cardigan. Briggs is in the bathroom for a little while, so I sit down on the bed and go through my phone while I wait.

I’m close to texting Maeve about it. To ask her opinion. But then I stop myself. My little sister is even more inexperienced than I am.

‘She’s doing well.’ Briggs’s voice comes through the bathroom door, and I lift my head.

‘I’m satisfied with her progress.’

‘Yes.’

‘Alright.’

The door opens, and I quickly glance away. His hair is damp, his beard smoothed down. He’s dressed in a plaid shirt again, but it’s undone, and there’s a black T-shirt underneath. Jeans. Boots. The usual.

‘C’mon,’ he tells me, pocketing his phone.

I follow him back outside, and we make our way in silence to the motel’s restaurant. Inside is noisy, as it’s a Saturday. There are people everywhere, but we manage to find a table in the noise, over in the back corner.

There’s a bar on the other side of the restaurant, and I can hear live music coming through, over the din of voices. I crane my neck to try to see a stage, but there are too many people, and I’m too far away.

‘What are you eating?’ Briggs asks me.

I haven’t even looked at the menu, too distracted by my swirling thoughts.

‘Oh, um…’ I struggle to act natural after what happened between us earlier. I can still feel the press of his hard cock against me, the pulse of need between my legs. And there doesn’t seem to be anything that’s going to drown that out.

I glance back at the bar.

‘We can get a drink after,’ he says, seeing my interest.

I stare at him, wide-eyed. ‘Really?’

He nods.

‘But you’re working.’

‘I think we both need it.’ What he doesn’t say is, After we almost dry-humped in a field.

‘Okay.’

I pick up the menu and go through it.

‘Oooh, they have nachos.’

‘You want nachos?’ he murmurs.

I glance at him again, finding him watching me. In the dim light, his eyes sparkle gold and black. I quickly look away, nodding.

‘I’ll go order.’
