“That can’t be them. Their ETA is still another hour, isn’t it?” Jase asked as he looked at Linc.
“It’s somebody who is lost. It happens all the time. I’ll go out and give him directions.”
She saw Linc’s scowl. “Of course, I’ll be taking you, Honey Lumpkins. A girl like me can’t possibly talk to a stranger in the dark without getting killed.”
She went back to the chair where she had taken off her shoes and put them on with her new outfit of jeans and a big flannel shirt.
“I’m ready, H.L.”
“H.L.?” Linc asked as he met her at the door.
“Honey Lumpkins of course.”
Linc chuckled.
They walked over together to the blue truck. It was just one man in the driver’s seat. One hand rested against his steering wheel, one hanging outside the window.
“How are you doing, sir? Can I help you?” Leila asked.
“I think I’m lost. I went down another one of these roads, but nobody would come out of their house to help me. I figured if I just stayed in my truck where you could see my hands, someone would help.”
Leila smiled. “Who are you looking for?” she asked.
“I’m looking for Number Four, Angler Way.”
She’d never seen or heard of a Street called Angler Way. Something was up.
Leila bit her lower lip. “I’m not all that good with addresses unless I’ve been to that house. But if you tell me their name, I’ll be able to tell you where to go.”
“Rogers. Buddy Rogers.”
“I’m sorry, I can’t help you. But if you go back out the way you came and stop at the gas station right before you turn onto the highway, you’ll get good cell reception and you can call your friend.”
“Thanks, that’s a great idea.” The man waved.
As soon as the truck drove off, she turned to Linc. “There’s no such street called Angler Way. That guy was lying.”
He grabbed her hand and they started running to the house.
“So, I’m making tacos. Not just any old tacos. These are the famous Drakos family tacos,” Jase called out as they came back in the front door.
“Jase. Go to your car and bring in all the firepower you can. We’ve just been cased.”
Leila watched as Jase turned off the heat on the burners and covered the seasoned taco meat. She tried to take in Linc’s words.
Then, without a word, he raced to his car and opened his trunk and pulled out a full duffle bag. She could see Linc doing something similar with his truck.
“Leila, pull out anything you think you can work with in close quarters, and also what you can handle further away,” Jase said. He was serious for once.
“I want a Sig Sauer and a couple of knives for me. I’d like another small gun that I can hide with me.”
Jace put the Sig into her hands and Linc lifted her jeans pant leg and attached a knife sheath and a deadly looking knife. “I think you need a shoulder holster for the pistol and a sheath that you can attach to your belt.”
She heard Kostya’s voice on Linc’s phone speaker.
“How sure are you that you were cased?” Kostya asked. Linc described the situation, and Kostya agreed. “Plus, he spotted Leila.”
“How far, Gideon?” Kostya asked.
