I immediately start cheering.
“THAT’S MY BROTHER!”
He finds me in the audience.
His expression could curdle milk.
I blow him a kiss.
Lenora is laughing so hard she nearly spills her champagne.
The auctioneer launches into Tyler’s introduction, emphasizing his successful bakery, his excellent culinary skills, and the romantic dinner he’s agreed to provide for the winning bidder.
I clap enthusiastically.
And because I am an excellent sister, I make certain to encourage every woman within earshot to bid.
By the time Tyler finally escapes the stage, he’s considerably more valuable than he was when he walked onto it.
You’re welcome, big brother.
“Remind me never to let you organize anything involving me,” Lenora says.
“Don’t be ridiculous. You’d love it.”
“I’m suddenly very concerned about what you’re planning for my birthday.”
I grin.
She groans.
A few more bachelors make their appearances before the auctioneer announces a name that immediately captures my attention.
Detective Bronson Hughes.
I sit up straighter.
“Oh, here we go,” Lenora murmurs.
The auctioneer introduces him as one of the city’s finest detectives, a man who spends his days solving mysteries and keeping Las Vegas safe.
Bronson walks onto the stage.
And suddenly, I’m wondering whether I should have skipped the champagne. Because I might actually need a clear head for this.
He’s even more handsome up close. And unlike several of the other bachelors, he doesn’t seem particularly interested in showing off.
He simply stands beside the auctioneer, one hand tucked into his pocket, looking mildly amused by the entire situation.
The auctioneer asks whether he has anything to say to the ladies in the audience.
Bronson takes the microphone.
“I’d like to remind everyone that bidding on a detective does not entitle you to confidential information about ongoing investigations.”
The ballroom erupts in laughter.
I gasp.
