A jolt of lust runs through me. I’m in trouble.

"So, what's the most disturbing crime scene you've ever investigated?"

We've been in my truck for approximately four minutes.

Four.

And she's already asked me six questions about my job.

"Can't discuss active investigations."

"Fine. What's the most disturbing crime scene from a closed investigation?"

"Can't discuss those either."

"Why not?"

"Confidentiality."

She considers this.

"What about your most interesting interrogation?"

"Nope."

"Biggest criminal conspiracy?"

"Absolutely not."

"Have you ever investigated a serial killer?"

"Rachel."

"What?"

"I'm beginning to think you only bid on me because you wanted access to confidential police information."

She gasps.

"That's ridiculous!"

I glance at her.

She grins. "Obviously, I was also interested in the handcuffs."

I nearly swallow my tongue.

The escape room is called Murder at Midnight.

Of course it is.

The employee behind the counter looks barely old enough to drive, and judging by the excitement on Rachel’s face, you’d think we’d just arrived at Disneyland.

“Have you done this one before?” she asks as we approach the counter.

“Nope.”

“Good. I wanted us to have the same advantage.”
