“If you fail…then one of the alphas or Felix has to do trick.”

Oh.

“I’m confident.” Absolutely not confident.

“First dessert.”

I reach out and pick it up, sniffing it and feeling it all over. I take a bite.

“Lamington!”

“Yes! Well done. The second one.”

It’s like a flat piece of bread, and it doesn’t smell of much, but I get a faint odour of sugar. As soon as I touch it, I know what it is.

“Fairy bread!”

“Yes! Well done, Omega. The third one. I’m going to put a spoon to your lips.”

I feel the spoon and open my mouth, and all my confidence disappears.

“What is it?” Yolanda prompts.

“I honestly have no idea. Um…cheesecake?”

“No, sorry, it’s a créme Brûlée.”

My heart drops. I’ve never had one of those before, though I’ve seen them. I had no idea the texture was so foul.

I take off the blindfold and turn to the pack. “Sorry.”

“It’s all good,” Zaire says, but Spectre is leaning heavily on him, and I regret that I’m making him stay out here longer.

“Now, someone has to do trick.”

Clint cracks his knuckles. “Fire at me, baby.”

Yolanda scoffs and waves him behind a fabric screen. We walk around there, and I stare in awe.

“You have to catch the golden donut with your teeth, and you have two minutes to do it.”

“What happens if he fails?” Jace asks.

“He gets thrown off the end of the jetty.”

Clint laughs and then lunges for the Hills Hoist. He cracks his fingers and spins, staring with a smile like a little boy let loose in a chocolate factory.

“Wait!” Yolanda says.

He turns back, and she holds up a pair of fluffy handcuffs.

“Oh, come on.”

He gets tied up, and then several kids grab ropes attached to the clothesline and run in a circle, making it spin. The donuts, and there must be fifteen of them, fly out, held on precariously by the food twine wrapped around them.

Clint walks in confidently, stands there, watching it. He gets about fifteen seconds in and then lunges, and the donut is in his mouth. It pulls free of the twine, and he’s got it.

“YES!” I jump on him, wrapping my arms around his neck. “You are amazing.”
