“Nisha, wow. That was incredible.” He genuinely looks impressed. “You’ve never pitched before?”

“I’ve never had the chance,” I say honestly.

“I’m sure we can change that.” He gives me his stunning smile and manages to make a tiny part of me believe that I might be good at this.

“I only have one minor suggestion, but everything else you already have covered,” he says, sitting up in his chair.

Breathe. “What’s that?” I say casually.

“Let’s move the sales numbers up to show them this is a proven concept and it’s already generating money, so that they can expect a quick ROI.”

“Yes. I’ll make that change now.”

I move up that slide as he glances at his watch.

“I have to run to my next meeting, but I’m excited about working together.”

I find myself puffing up at his words. I turn to him.

“Me too.”

I’m excited about every moment I get to spend with you.

9. I Can’t Even

I sink into the leather sectional and stare up at the vaulted ceilings, resting my feet in Eshaan’s lap as he flicks through Netflix.

“What do you want to watch?”

“Anything is fine,” I reply. With work being so busy, I barely have time to watch TV. All I’m looking forward to tonight is a drama-free evening together, especially after everything.

The doorbell rings, and I slide my feet off his lap as Shaan says, “Finally, dinner,” and gets up. I wanted to just eat the aloo parathas Eshaan’s mom made, but he insisted we order Thai. I glance at the clock in the kitchen. It’s almost 8 p.m. I should let Rachel know I’ll be home late, especially since I borrowed her car this morning to get to work on time. My phone died on the drive over here, so I grab Eshaan’s from the coffee table to send her a quick text.

I unlock his phone, and Instagram notifications flood his screen. That’s not unusual, and I’m about to swipe them closed when I notice a string of DMs from his ex, Sonia.

Why is she messaging him?

My skin prickles.

The front door closes and Eshaan’s steps thud on the hardwood as he comes up the stairs, but I can’t stop myself from opening up the DM chat, my pulse pounding in my ears.

Is this where I pretend I don’t miss you?

Careful. We both know how things turned out last time 😉

Turned out pretty 🔥🔥🔥

Eshaan places our dinner on the dining room table and saunters over to the couch. “Let’s eat.”

I stare at the messages as he grabs his phone. “What are you doing with my phone?”

“My phone’s dead. I was just going to message Rachel and tell her I’ll be home late when your messages with Sonia popped up.” I can’t hide the edge in my voice.

I bring a cushion close to my chest as he looks at me, then away.

“She won’t stop messaging me.”

“Right.” I shake my head and shift in my seat. “Looks like you’re messaging her back.”
