Chris was still driving, even worse than before.

“Chris,” I said through gritted teeth. “You need to pull over.”

“Never.”

Except it looked like someone in the cruiser next to me had had enough.

I couldn’t see their face because I was now slumped in the seat, but I saw the banged-up metal.

Had they rammed us once before?

The cruiser pulling up to the left of us spun the vehicle sideways, and then Chris was no longer facing straight on the road. He was now faced to the entrance of a Walmart.

Of course, Chris pulled in.

He was jumping out of the moving vehicle in the next second, and the car was no longer being navigated by a single soul.

I watched as the truck drove straight toward a gas pump at the gas station.

There was only a single car, and they were pumping gas.

“Shit,” I said as the truck kept moving.

Not fast, but fast enough that I knew it was about to hit the lady filling her car up.

Then that same banged-up cruiser was in front of us, stopping us with the vehicle.

We came to a stop, and I wanted to cry.

The officer in the banged-up cruiser got out, and I thought I was seeing things.

“What on earth…”

The door that my fucked-up leg was resting against was opened, and suddenly I was passed out again.

Thirty-Two

Got caught giving a fuck. So embarrassing.

—Court to Charleigh

Court

I’d never done a pit maneuver before.

In fact, I’d only ever seen it done in videos.

I knew the basic theory, though.

There was one part of me that wanted to get him to stop now. The other part, however, could see the pain on Charleigh’s face. I knew if I did the pit maneuver, it would hurt her.

But it was probably hurting her just as badly sitting in the back of a work truck with the steering of a boat as Chris dodged and weaved through traffic.

He was about to kill himself, Charleigh, and even others with how recklessly he was driving.

I’d watched him blow past a preschool with kids on the sidewalk ready to cross over the road.

Thank God they’d been under control by a teacher who had a good head on her shoulders and kept them from doing anything crazy.
