“Be there in twenty minutes,” he says, and I hang up the phone.

I pull up Davis’s number right away and unblock him long enough to send out a text.

Me:

I’m going to need you to get the message and realize I’m not coming back, and if I do, it’s not to you. Fuck off and stop fucking with me.

I press send. The three dots come up, but before I get his reply, I block him again. The next message I send is to my lawyer.

Me:

Davis sent someone to do a hit-and-run on my car. This is ridiculous. Can we get a restraining order?

I’m about to call him when the door opens, and Asa sticks out his head. “I gotta show you the coolest video.”

I tuck my phone in my back pocket. “Coming.”

I know it’s only a matter of time before I have to tell Lincoln, especially now that Brock knows. “Great,” I mumble to myself, “just great.” I settle in a chair, and Asa perches on the armrest beside me with his tablet. I smile at him. “Okay, let’s see this cool video.”

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

LINCOLN

It’s just after 5:00 p.m., and everyone in the room has been ready to roll out since noon. All of us are sitting in our bulletproof vests, waiting for the call to make this next drop.

“I’ll be back,” I say, heading outside to call the station and then Asa. Cathy answers on the first ring.

“Hey, it’s me.”

“Hey, you,” Cathy says. “I take it you’re still where you are supposed to be?”

“You could say that.” I look around at the cars in the parking lot, seeing that it’s full. When I got here this morning, there were only two cars.

“Is Captain free?” I ask her.

“He is. I’ll transfer you now. Have a good night.” She quickly puts me on hold, and it rings.

“Burke, anything?” Captain says when he picks up.

“Nothing.” It’s the same answer I’ve given each time I’ve checked in today.

“Did their contact reach out to them?” The same question he’s asked me each time.

“Radio silence,” I huff out. “If it’s what I think it is, the call is going to be coming in after ten, which makes for a long fucking day.”

“You take the next two days off,” he snaps. “I don’t want to see your face in this station.”

“Got it. I’ll check in via text. Enjoy your night.” I hang up and pull up the text thread for Finley, then decide to call her instead.

“City Morgue,” she answers. It annoys me, but at the same time, I can’t help but laugh.

“Now who’s the comedian?”

“I would never steal that title from you. What can I do for you?”

“I’m calling, for one, to check in.”

“We are alive and chilling on the couch. Wyatt came over to play for a bit in the tree house. Harmony and I sat on the back deck and had some sweet tea, since we weren’t allowed with the cool kids.”
