A pause that was way too long.

“…Yes?”

“‘Yes’?” I echoed sharply. “That did not sound convincing, Spencer.”

Her cheeks flushed. “We—”

“Spence,” I said, my voice tightening now.

She never wanted kids. Not even before the world ended. We’d talked about it late at night in the treehouse, her head on my chest, my fingers in her hair, and both of us pretending the future was something we could plan for like normal people. She’d said she loved children but didn’t want the terror of bringing one into a world like ours.

And now, she wasn’t being careful?

“We are in the apocalypse,” I reminded her.

“I said yes!” she insisted, her mouth quirking defensively in that familiar way that almost made me smile despite the absolute horror crawling up my spine. “We were careful.”

“Define careful,” I pleaded.

Luck shifted. “Okay. I feel like I should not be here for this part—”

“You absolutely should be here for this part,” I snapped, pointing at him. “You’re involved. Are you not?”

He froze. His mismatched eyes widened. “Technically.”

“Technically?”

“Fully,” he corrected quickly. “Fully involved.”

“Then, answer.”

He swallowed. “Pull-out method.”

My eyes widened. For a second, I couldn’t even speak.

The wind battered the warehouse windows. Somewhere in the building, old metal groaned.

Spencer sat between us with her face red, and the three men who had apparently fallen in love with her looked like they were bracing for me to start swinging.

“Are you kidding me?” I asked.

Mad sighed. “We need to do the damn body checks.”

“Yeah, great idea,” I muttered. “Let’s just strip and ignore the potential life-altering consequences.”

“I’m fine,” Spencer cut in, exasperated now. “I would know if something was wrong.”

Then she froze. Completely.

Her expression went blank, and all the blood drained out of my face. “Oh,” she whispered.

All of us looked at her.

“…Oh?” Oxi repeated carefully.

“What does ‘oh’ mean?” Luck asked.

She pressed a hand faintly to her stomach. Then, she shifted her legs weirdly, the smallest movement, but I knew her well enough to know exactly when realization hit. “Oh my God.”
