How had they been cleaned so quickly? She didn’t just disinfect them; she cleaned them.
I grabbed my clothes with trembling hands and dressed quickly. Warm fabric slid over my skin, and it felt so good that my eyes burned again.
Oxi touched the sleeve of his coat as if he couldn’t believe it either. Mad dressed quickly, but even he paused when he pulled on his warmed shirt. Keith did the same.
Luck shoved his foot into one sock and groaned. “I would marry this bin.”
“No,” Mad said.
“You don’t get to decide that.” Luck pouted.
“You’re not marrying the sterilization bin,” Mad sighed.
“It gave me warm socks, Mad. That’s more than most people have done for me.”
“What about Spencer?” Oxi chuckled.
Luck let out a fake sob. “Sorry, bin. It’s Spencer I want to marry.”
Sofia opened the glass door once we were dressed. A soft seal released, and even warmer air drifted from the hallway behind her. “Thanks for not being weird about my process.”
Luck stared at her. “That was us not being weird?”
“For apocalypse survivors? Yes. Very restrained. I’ve had to kill a few survivors before who tried to break the glass.”
Mad retrieved his axe and stepped through first, scanning past her. “That makes unfortunate sense.”
Sofia nodded. “Come on in. Shut the door behind you. It locks automatically. Can you tell me your names? I’ve been assigning temporary labels in my head, but I’m told people prefer names.”
We came inside, and Mad shut the glass door behind us. The lock clicked with a soft mechanical certainty.
“I’m Spencer,” I spoke first.
Sofia’s gaze flicked over my red hair and the white streaks. “Spencer. Excellent. Much better than Hypothermic Katana Woman.”
Luck snorted.
“Mad,” Mad said.
“Mad?” Sofia repeated.
“Nickname.”
“Is it earned?”
“Yes,” Luck, Oxi, and I said at the same time.
Keith looked amused, and Mad rolled his eyes.
“I’m Luck,” Luck told her.
Sofia nodded. “Not shovel boy.”
“Oxi.” Oxi moved closer to me, his hand brushing mine before dropping away.
Keith moved on my other side. “Keith.”
Mad crossed his arms. “And you’re Sofia.”
