“That look does not mean nothing.”
I slowed my steps.
Sol slowed too, looking at me suspiciously.
I leaned closer to her ear and lowered my voice.
“It means if Kai hadn’t called, we’d probably already be upstairs, and I’d have you bent over somewhere in that house.”
Sol stopped dead.
Her eyes widened before her palm smacked against my arm.
“Rome!”
I laughed and caught her hand before she could hit me again.
“What? You asked.”
“I did not ask you all that!”
“You asked what I was thinking.”
“I asked why you were looking at me!”
“Same difference.”
“It absolutely is not.”
She sucked her teeth and started walking faster toward the front door, but the blush spreading across her cheeks gave her away.
I followed behind her, laughing.
“Now who walking fast?”
“Shut up, Roman.”
Still smiling, I reached around her and opened the front door.
Sol stepped across the threshold before turning around to face me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then the playful irritation disappeared from her expression.
“Be careful.”
Something about the way she said it hit me directly in the chest.
I nodded once.
“I will.”
I started to turn away.
“Rome?”
I looked back.
