“I didn’t say anything.”
“You made a sound.”
She smiled.
I shoved my phone back into my pocket.
Kai was becoming a problem.
Not a bad problem.
Which was exactly why he was a problem.
I had spent a long time learning how to keep people at a safe distance.
Especially men.
So when Kai first started sniffing around, I thought I had him figured out.
Fine.
Funny.
Too damn confident.
Probably used to women falling all over him.
Absolutely not.
Except the more time I spent around him, the harder it became to keep him in that little box I’d created.
Because I could actually chill with him.
That was the part getting me.
We could ride around listening to music and argue over who had the better playlist. We could grab something to eat and spend more time talking shit than eating. We could sit in the car for twenty minutes after getting somewhere because neither of us had finished whatever stupid conversation we’d started.
I could kiki with him.
Laugh with him.
Be myself around him.
He got on my damn nerves constantly, but somehow I kept answering his calls.
Kept responding to his texts.
Kept letting him come around.
Attraction was easy.
Actually liking somebody’s company?
That was different.
That was how somebody slipped through cracks in walls you swore were solid.
And Khalil Devereaux was finding every damn crack.
