That landed.
She snatched her purse from the chair. “You’re a fucking asshole.”
“You knew that before you came in here.”
“Fuck you, Rome.”
I pointed toward the door. “You can get the fuck out now.”
Ulani stormed toward it, then stopped with her hand on the handle and looked back at me. “One day somebody is going to do you exactly how you do women.”
I almost laughed. “You already did.”
Her face dropped.
I held her stare. “Difference is, you made sure I watched.”
Ulani didn’t have shit to say to that. She yanked the door open and disappeared into the hallway, slamming it behind her hard enough to shake the glass.
I sat there for a second, staring at the closed door. Then I looked down at the Hollis paperwork.
“Now where the fuck was I?”
I made it through exactly two sentences before Sol crossed my mind.
I stopped reading. Slowly lowered the paper. And frowned.
“Man, what the fuck?”
⸻
I tried to work after Ulani left. I really did. But after reading the same paragraph in the Hollis file three damn times and still not knowing what the hell it said, I finally closed it.
My eyes dropped to my phone.
This was probably crossing a line.
I called Darius anyway.
“Cole.”
“I need you to look into somebody.”
“Business?”
“No.”
Silence.
Then, “Ohhhh, shit.”
I frowned. “What?”
“Nothing. Just trying to figure out when Roman Devereaux started ordering background checks on women.”
“Do you want your fucking job?”
Darius burst out laughing. “My bad, boss. Who is she?”
