“What?”
“You can’t fight everybody.”
“I absolutely can.”
“No, you can’t.”
“Okay. Then I’ll pay somebody.”
The words left my mouth before I thought about them.
Sol laughed.
I didn’t.
Not immediately.
Because there it was again.
Money.
The secret sitting underneath damn near everything.
I forced a smile before she noticed.
My phone vibrated on the coffee table.
I reached for it.
Nothing important.
But for some reason, another man popped into my head.
The one from the gas station.
I could still see him leaning near the pump, looking entirely too comfortable trying to talk to me while I was rushing to get Halo to the doctor.
Kai.
I didn’t even know why I remembered his name so easily.
Probably because he was fine.
Fine enough to piss me off.
Tall. Handsome. A little cocky.
And that smile?
Trouble.
Definitely trouble.
I had barely given him the time of day.
Halo was sick in the car, my nerves were shot, and the last thing I cared about was some man trying to flirt.
But when I’d told him I was rushing a sick baby to the doctor, he’d changed.
