He huffs a mirthless laugh. “Deacon County police station.”

I start recording on my phone now, too.

Cam laughs, then nods at me. “He’s not allowed in without a search warrant.”

I follow them outside, where Cam is thrown into the back of his patrol car. I keep recording until the car is gone. And my brain catches up. What the fuck just happened? After heading back inside, I lock the door and call Ken. His phone rings three times before he picks up.

“Hey Jay, what’s up?”

“Cam was arrested. He told me to tell you. I have videos from my phone and our Ring doorbell that I’m going to send you.”

There’s silence on his end. “Who arrested him?”

“Indy’s father. He got her number…he called twenty times. He left no voice messages but texted her…a lot.”

There’s shuffling on the other end as he’s moving around. “Send me the footage and a screen grab of the calls and texts. I’m going to send one of my guys over there. He is a…an attorney, too. He can help with anything legal if her father shows up again. Don’t let any officer in unless they have a warrant.”

He hangs up before I can respond. An immediate text from him comes through with a picture and the name of the man he’s sending over. I send him the videos and take the photos of her phone that he wanted.

My thoughts are going a hundred miles a minute. I can’t fucking think straight. I call Kia, and he answers on the first ring.

“Cam was arrested, and Indy’s phone was blown up with messages from her father. Is Lain there?”

“Yeah, Jay, I can hear you,” she says.

“You didn’t give him her number, did you?”

“Sikes,” Kia warns. My eyes widen at his tone. He’s one of my oldest friends, but he knows Indy is my priority. If Lain did anything that would get Indy hurt, I need to fucking know.

“It’s fine, Kia. No, I didn’t give him her number. Jay…” She sounds hurt. I guess I understand why Kia jumped down my shit. “You know me better than that.”

“Sorry, Lain. I needed to make sure.”

“Did he arrest Cam?” Kia asks.

“Yeah, I don’t even know what happened. I had to go upstairs to put pants on, and when I came back down, he was in cuffs.”

“Do you want us to come over?” Lain asks, her voice breaking the silence that had lingered.

“Yes,” I whisper.

Within ten minutes, Kia and Lainy are coming through my door. She hugs me and moves into the living room. “Where is Indy?”

I look up the stairs. “She’s asleep. She has no idea any of this has happened. She’ll spiral if she finds out. This night was already fucked.”

They’re sitting on the couch when my doorbell chimes. Looking through the peephole, I see that it’s the man Ken sent. I open the door, holding it for him to come inside.

“Asher,” he says, introducing himself, holding his hand out.

“Jared,” I say, shaking his hand.

He looks at Kia and Lainy. “Do they know?” he asks, and I shake my head. “They’re about to get a CliffsNotes version.”

I nod. Indy won’t care. At least I hope not.

“Ken is going to get Cam now. From the Ring camera, we could see and hear Cam tell him that Indy wasn’t here. Is she here?”

“Yeah, she’s asleep upstairs.”
