He’d had experience with arm candy, eye candy, and every other type of candy, and he was over it. Sorry, Eric.

The next time he got involved with a woman, it was going to be different.

And it’s only going to be with ONE woman, he thought before he drifted off to sleep.

Chapter 9

Callie had written the first two chapters of her new novel when she stalled out again. She was sitting inside, hunched over her laptop, when Quinn called, and she welcomed the interruption.

“Aloha,” she answered cheerfully.

“Aloha? You’ve been there for a week, and you speak Hawaiian now?” Quinn teased.

Callie laughed. She hadn’t realized how much she missed her best friend until then. She’d been too busy spying on Chase and writing to think about anything else, but now she felt a twinge of homesickness.

“When are you coming to visit me?”

“As soon as I can swing it. So, what have you been up to? Meet any hot surfer dudes yet?”

Callie immediately thought of Chase, but she had no idea if he even knew how to surf. She was pretty sure he was talented at other things, though. At least, that’s how she’d written his character.

“Not yet, though a surfer dude isn’t really my type.”

“What about your sexy next-door neighbor?”

“I haven’t seen him for a few days.”

“Bummer. From what you described, he sounds yummy.”

“Well, he might be, but I’m not his type.”

“Says who?”

“Says me. The last time I saw him, he was hitting on two women at the pool. For all I know, he’s holed up with them somewhere.” Even though she’d said it, she had trouble believing it, or maybe she just didn’t want to.

“Maybe he was just being friendly.”

“It doesn’t even matter because I came up with a different use for him.”

“Let me guess. You’re writing him into one of your books.”

“How’d you know?”

Quinn laughed. “Because I know you, and that sounds perfect. Whatever it takes to get you writing again!”

Callie sighed. “I wrote a couple of chapters, but now I’m stuck. I think I need to see him again to get some more material.”

“Um-hmm.”

“What?”

“Nothing. Just wondering if that’s the only reason you want to see him again.”

“Quinn. I barely know the guy.”

“But you want to.”

“For research purposes.”
