She wasn’t sure if he meant the necklace, her, or both.
“Look in the mirror,” the seller suggested.
There was a small standing mirror on top of the counter, and Callie leaned forward to look.
“It’s fourteen-karat gold with hand enameling. Very pretty, yes?” said the seller.
Callie nodded.
“We’ll take it,” Chase said and whipped out his wallet.
“Would you like a box?”
“That won’t be necessary. She’ll wear it.”
The woman told him the price, and he counted out the cash and handed it over.
“She’s a very lucky lady,” the seller said.
“I’m the lucky one,” he replied, and taking Callie’s hand, he led her away.
She fingered the necklace, in a state of shock. “But I thought this was for your mom.”
“I never said that,” he said with a teasing gleam in his eye.
“But you and Miranda talked about it…”
“Yes, and by now, she’s probably bought several things for our mom. This one is for you.”
“I don’t know what to say except that I love it. Thank you.”
“My pleasure.”
She practically floated through the rest of the marketplace, stopping once to buy something for Quinn and her own mom. Finally, they met back up with Miranda, and as predicted, her arms were laden down with packages.
“Did you leave anything for the rest of the tourists?” Chase teased, relieving her of some of the bags.
“Very funny.” Then Miranda’s eyes went wide, and she reached out and touched Callie’s pendant.
“Ohmigod. Where’d you find this? I love it!”
Callie looked up at Chase and saw he was grinning, which she took as permission to disclose the truth. “Your brother bought it for me.”
Miranda glanced at Chase and then back at Callie. “You two are so stinkin’ adorable together. You’re just like a couple in one of your books!”
Callie flinched at that but quickly recovered. She hadn’t had a chance to send Chase her rough draft yet, but she still planned on it. She hoped he’d find it just as “adorable” as Miranda surely would, but that remained to be seen.
“We’re not that perfect, but close,” Chase teased.
As they walked back to the car, he took her hand again, and she leaned into his side. No matter what happened from here on out, this had been a spectacular day, one she’d never forget.
While Miranda climbed into the back seat, Chase walked Callie around to the front passenger side. Before he opened the door, he put his lips to her ear and whispered, “I can’t wait to see you in that necklace and nothing else.”
If she’d thought the day had been perfect, the night would be even better…
Chapter 34
When they returned to the resort, a car was idling in front of their building. “Oh, my Uber is here,” Miranda said.
