Quinn’s gorgeous blue eyes went wide. “In love with him?”

Callie nodded. “Big time.”

“Wow!”

“I know. Crazy, right?”

“Why crazy?”

Callie shrugged. “One, we haven’t known each other that long. Two, I came here to write, not fall in love. Three, he’s a divorce lawyer, for Pete’s sake. Four—”

“Stop right there,” Quinn said, holding up her hand and laughing. “What’s wrong with him being a divorce lawyer?”

“Hello? Could we be any more opposite? A divorce lawyer and a romance writer? It sounds ridiculous.”

“Opposites attract,” Quinn stated simply.

“Yes, and they also end up in divorce court just like Chase’s clients.”

“As opposed to, let’s say, you and Adam, who were more alike?”

Callie flinched.

“Sorry, sweetie, but it’s true. You and Adam may have been more compatible on paper, but look what he did to you.”

“I guess that just proves it can happen to anyone.”

“There’s no magic formula for love. Surely, you know that.”

Callie sighed. “I’m scared, Quinn.”

Quinn immediately reached out and clasped her hand on the table. “I get it. I do. You didn’t expect this to happen, and I’m sure he didn’t either. But it did. So, what are you going to do about it?”

Just then the waitress came over with their food, which saved Callie from having to answer. They each took a couple of bites of their sandwiches before she replied.

“I kind of already did something.”

“You told him you’re in love with him?”

“Not in so many words. Well, sort of.”

Quinn furrowed her brow. “You lost me.”

“I let my book heroine speak for me.”

She watched while Quinn deciphered her words.

“I sent him the first draft of my new book, which is essentially about us with a hefty dose of fiction thrown in.”

“But you never let anyone read your drafts.”

“Exactly.”

Quinn sat back in her chair, looking shocked.

Callie took a few more bites of sandwich because, despite feeling anxious about what she’d done, she was starved.

“Well, what do you think?” she finally said.
