“And?”

“And I’d like to transition into another area of family law within the practice if that’s acceptable.” He felt like a teenager asking to borrow the car.

“Another area?”

“Yes. I’m burnt out on divorce law. I want to switch it up, maybe move into estate planning.”

“But we have Bob for estate planning.”

“Bob’s been talking about retiring soon.”

“He’s been saying that for the past ten years.”

“Well, maybe I can take some of his workload. He can show me the ropes before he leaves.”

Daniel gave a weary sigh. He probably needed some time to absorb the news, and Chase would give him that. “You don’t have to answer right away, but when I get home, I’d like us to sit down and discuss it.”

“We’d have to run it by the team too.”

“I understand that.”

“Can I ask you a personal question?”

Uh-oh. Where’s he going? “Okay.”

“Does this have anything to do with that woman Cassandra?”

“Cass? No. Why?”

“Well, I know she did a number on you, and you haven’t been yourself since.”

Funny, but he hadn’t thought much about Cass since he’d been gone, and especially since Callie…

“Listen, son. We all suffer setbacks. That doesn’t mean you have to uproot your entire life. You’re a damn good divorce attorney.”

“I can be a damn good estate planner too.”

“You might find it boring.”

“I doubt it. For once, I’d like to practice law with people who aren’t hell-bent on destroying each other.”

“That happens in all areas of the law. It’s the nature of the beast. But if you’re really serious about this…”

“I am.”

“Then we’ll discuss it further when you get back. In the meantime, I’ll mention it to Bob and see what he says.”

Chase stopped pacing and stood at the patio door, looking out at the ocean. “You sure you’re okay with this?”

“I kind of have to be, don’t I? You’re my son, and I want you on my team. So, if that’s what it takes…”

For some reason, Chase got choked up. “Thanks, Dad.”

“You can thank me by coming home and getting your mother off my back.”

Chase laughed because everyone knew that despite his grumbling, Daniel adored his wife.

“Oh, and bring the new girl around. Callie, is it? Miranda told us all about her at dinner the other night.”
