She brushed her hair back, and he glanced at her mostly bare shoulder. Her skin looked so soft, so touchable…
“I might not be good at it.”
“That’s okay.”
“Will you promise to be patient with me?”
He made an X over his heart.
“And if I don’t like it, we’ll do something else?”
“Absolutely.” I can think of a lot of other things we can do.
“Okay.”
“Yes?”
“Yes. I only hope you won’t regret asking me.” With that, she stood up, and he stood too.
Once again, her eyes drifted over his chest and, if he weren’t mistaken, a little further south. He needed to escape before his arousal sprang to life.
“I won’t regret it. We should probably go to bed…I mean, to sleep. We should probably get some sleep.”
She giggled, and he averted his eyes.
“Good night, Bryce.”
“Good night.”
She turned and walked away, her dress swishing enticingly against her legs. He stood there and watched, and all his good intentions went out with her.
Chapter 15
Chloe came downstairs the next morning dressed and ready to go. When she entered the kitchen, Bryce was plating pancakes and bacon for them. She took a moment to admire him at the stove in his golf clothes. His polo shirt and pleated shorts fit him to a tee (pun intended), and she caught a tantalizing whiff of his cologne in addition to the mouthwatering aromas of breakfast.
“Good morning,” she said, hopping up on a stool.
“You’re just in time,” he replied, sliding a plate across to her.
“What if I hadn’t been up?”
“I would have come and woken you. Wouldn’t want you to miss out on breakfast.”
He smiled then, a rare and beautiful sight.
“Thanks for making it.”
He came around and slid onto the stool beside her. “Dig in. You’ll need the energy today.”
She gave him a wary glance. “Is golf that hard?”
He chuckled as he poured syrup in a figure eight over his pancakes. “You’ll see.”
She’d been elated when he’d invited her, even though she’d never hit a golf ball in her life. She’d had a hard time falling asleep, anticipating their outing and trying not to think of it as a date.
She doubted he’d call it that since he’d made it very clear he didn’t date his employees. She wondered if he’d asked her because he knew Elle was booked that weekend or he’d wanted to keep her away from Seb. Admittedly, that thought had given her a secret thrill. If he was jealous, that could mean he cared about her as more than Molly’s nanny.
“Where are we going?” she asked once they’d left the neighborhood in his SUV.
