“Hudson got it even worse than me. We talked this morning, and he said that Jared waited up for him and reamed him out.”
“Oh boy.”
“I hate how Jared found out, but I’m also relieved. Now that he knows, we won’t have to sneak around anymore.”
“Have you talked to Jared since it happened?”
“No, but I’m sure he won’t let me off the hook that easily. I’m bound to get a lecture, just like Hudson did.”
“I still don’t understand why he’s so against you two dating. Hudson seems like a great guy, and Nick thinks so too. He’s gotten to know Hudson a lot better since he moved into the same apartment complex.”
“I know. I wish Jared would get over it.”
“Give him some more time. I’m sure he’ll get used to the idea.”
“I hope so.”
“What else do you need me to do?”
“You could cut the cheese.”
Stacy burst out laughing, and after a beat, Kelsey joined in.
“And to think, you’re older than me!” Kelsey teased.
“Only by a few years.”
“Yes, but you’re supposed to be the mature one.”
Stacy grinned. “I’ve loosened up some.”
“I know, and I’m glad.”
“So, when are you seeing Hudson next?”
“Wednesday evening. He’s babysitting Annie again, and he asked me to help. He’s bringing her over here this time.”
“Sounds like fun.” Then Stacy turned away and started cutting cheese slices onto a plate.
Kelsey rubbed her back. “It’ll happen for you too one day,” she said, knowing how much Stacy wanted to have children.
“I hope so.”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
“If Nick asked you to marry him, would you?”
Stacy paused and stared at her. “Why? Do you know something I don’t?”
“No. I was just curious if you’d do it again, the whole marriage thing.”
“I never thought I would, but now… Yes, I would marry Nick.”
Kelsey threw her arms around Stacy and squeezed.
“Knife in hand,” Stacy scolded, holding the knife away from them.
