“Um-hmm.” She went back to reading.
“What’s it about?”
Tipping her sunglasses down, she eyed him suspiciously. “You really want to know?”
“I want to know everything about you, including the saucy books you read.”
She laughed. “Okay. Well, it’s about this couple who had a whirlwind romance, but then he moved out of state.”
“That’s a love story? Sounds depressing.”
“Have you ever read a romance novel before?”
“No, but…”
“If you did, you’d know that there’s always a happy ending.”
“So, this couple will get back together, get married, have kids, and live happily ever after?”
“That pretty much sums it up, although I’m not even halfway through it yet. A lot can happen between now and then.”
“Like what?”
“I don’t know, just a lot of trials and tribulations.”
“But in the end, true love prevails.”
“Exactly.”
“And women read these because of the happy endings?”
“I can’t speak for all women, but there are other reasons too.”
“Such as?”
“They’re stories of friendship, family, hope, love—”
“And sex?”
She laughed. “Yes, that too.”
“A lot of sex?”
“It varies.”
“Hmm.”
“Piqued your interest, didn’t I?”
“You piqued my interest from day one.”
“Such a charmer.”
“I mean it.”
“I believe you,” she said, smiling sweetly. “And for the record, the feeling was mutual.”
He returned her smile, and then she went back to the book.
