The two men stood on the porch and eyed each other with mutual disdain. Jax was still in disbelief that he’d been kicked out, especially since they’d been making out like teenagers mere moments ago. Not to mention, he hated seeing Avery in tears and knowing he was partially to blame. If only this jerk hadn’t shown up when he did…
“Not so cocky now, are you, boss man?” Trevor said.
“If we weren’t standing on her porch, you’d be flat on your ass by now,” Jax replied.
“Didn’t take long for you to go after your new employee, did it? Even though she was already taken.”
Jax should have turned and walked away, but he never backed down from a fight. Besides, it wasn’t his honor he was worried about defending. He would have relished telling Trevor that Avery had planned on breaking up with him long before tonight and that Jax had nothing to do with her decision. However, the guy probably wouldn’t believe him, and it wasn’t his place, anyway.
“The lady asked us to leave, so we need to leave.”
“I’m not going anywhere until I talk to her.”
“She doesn’t want to talk to you.”
Then the front door opened, and Avery stood there, her arms crossed over her chest and a resigned expression on her face. At least she’d stopped crying, but she still avoided Jax’s gaze.
She looked directly at Trevor and said, “Come back inside.”
Jax’s mouth fell open, and he was about to protest, but then Avery finally met his gaze. With a guilty look, she shook her head and stepped aside to allow Trevor back in. The next thing Jax knew, she was gone, and he was left standing there in the dark.
