“I’ll move in with you!”
He pushed his hair back and broke out with a wide smile. “You sure?”
She nodded. “As long as we agree on rent and sharing other costs.”
“Okay.”
“Are you sure?” She turned the question around on him.
“Positive. Let’s shake on our new landlord/tenant relationship.”
He held out his hand, and she shook it. While she was becoming more accustomed to his touch, she still found it intoxicating every time. His eyes sparkled as he gazed at her and continued to hold her hand.
“What made you decide?”
How could she explain it to him when she couldn’t explain it to herself? “I honestly don’t know.”
He chuckled and let go of her hand. “Well, I promise you won’t regret it. I’ll be a good roommate.”
She didn’t doubt that, but the first part was up for debate. Could they cohabitate without crossing the line? Was this a wise decision, or was she a fool to risk their friendship? Later, she’d mull over these questions in private, but for now, she had another question.
“When you asked what my verdict was, you seemed surprised by my answer. Why?”
“Because I was asking how you felt about eating ice cream in winter, not moving in.”
“Oh.” She felt a twinge of embarrassment for blurting it out like that.
“It doesn’t matter. I’m just glad you said yes.”
“Me too,” she said, and in that moment, she meant it.
“Let’s go home and get you settled in.”
She smiled as he drove up the hill to Mountain Dreams, her new home. Little did she know that the days ahead wouldn’t all be dreamy, but for now, it felt like a dream come true.
Fifteen
Cody entered the resort office on Monday morning with an extra spring in his step, which didn’t go unnoticed by Jax and Avery.
“Morning,” he said.
Jax was leaning against the front counter, holding a coffee mug, and Avery was sitting behind the desk, also with mug in hand. Both greeted him with curious looks.
“What? Can’t a guy be in a good mood around here?”
“It’s Monday,” Jax grumbled.
Avery smiled at Cody. “Ignore your brother. It’s only his first cup of coffee.”
“He’ll still be a grump after the second one,” Cody teased.
Jax ignored the dig. “So, what put you in such a good mood, your houseguest?”
“She’s not just my houseguest. She’s my tenant.”
Jax’s expression went from surprised to concerned. “Does Wyatt know about this?”
“It’s none of his business.”
