A few weeks ago, she would have glossed over it, but given how close they’d become, she decided to come clean.
“I’m a little nervous,” she admitted.
“About?”
“Meeting your mom.”
“Ah.”
“That’s it? No words of comfort?”
He laughed. “If I give you some, would it change anything?”
She shrugged. “Maybe a little. Should I be worried?”
“I don’t think so, but…”
“Oh no. There’s a but?”
He sighed. “She’ll probably be concerned about how our relationship will affect Joey. She’s been worried about him ever since the divorce.”
“That’s completely understandable,” Beth said, although it didn’t make her feel any better. How could she convince Mrs. Woodward that she wouldn’t hurt Joey when she couldn’t be sure of that herself? She had no idea what the future held for the three of them. All she knew was that everything felt perfect right now.
Colton reached over and squeezed her knee. “I don’t think it’s going to be a problem. Once she sees how good you are with Joey, I’m sure she’ll feel better.”
“Just promise me one thing.”
“Anything.”
“You won’t leave my side.” She said it half-jokingly, and as expected, Colton laughed. But in the next moment, he grew serious.
“I can’t promise that everything will be easy for us, Beth. But I can promise that I’ll do everything possible to smooth the way.”
So far, he’d been a man of his word, but why did she still feel uneasy?
