Someone was downstairs, I heard voices.

I shoved back the covers, dragged on my robe, and rushed to the door, easing it open.

Morgan was talking fast to one of the other guards. Constantine was nowhere to be seen. Tying the sash on my robe, I ran down the stairs. Morgan straightened when he saw me, both males going quiet.

I held my robe closed at my throat. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing for you to be concerned about, I assure you. I’m sorry we woke you,” he said.

“Where’s Constantine?”

The front door opened and my mate walked in. He was in only a pair of trousers and his chest was splattered with blood, not his, not from me, this was fresh.

I rushed toward him, and he lifted his hands, stopping me. “Go back to bed, Delphine. I’ll be up soon.”

“What happened? What’s going on?”

He strode up to me and took my shoulders in his hands. “Please, for once, can you do as I ask without question or resistance?”

I shook my head. “Tell me what happened to you—”

He took my face in his hands, his eyes locking on mine. “Please, I need you to do as I ask.”

He was serious, deadly. I wanted to keep questioning him, but the look in his eyes told me I needed to do as he said. I nodded and rushed back upstairs, my belly in knots.

Hours passed. I tried to stay awake, but despite my nerves and worry, the last few days and nights with Constantine made it impossible. I couldn’t keep my eyes open.

The next time I woke it was early morning. I heard voices outside and quickly got out of bed and rushed to the window. Constantine and a female stood by his car, she had black hair and her head was dipped. They stood close, deep in conversation—

He pulled her into his arms, holding her tight. I froze, watching in horror as he ducked his head to see her face, pressed a kiss to the top of her head, then took her hand and led her to the passenger side. She got in, then he strode around the car and did the same.

I spun from the window and ran out of the bedroom and down the stairs.

Morgan was at the bottom, but this time he was on his own and it was obvious he was waiting for me. He got in my way when I tried to pass.

“You have to stay inside,” he said.

“Where’s Constantine going? Who was that with him?” I asked, trying to get around him.

Sympathy covered Morgan’s face as he stood in my way again. “He wanted to tell you himself, but things happened fast last night—”

“Tell me what?” My heart pounded. “Where is he going, Morgan? Why was he with that female?”

“He had to leave.”

“Leave? What are you talking about? He wouldn’t just leave, not without telling me. He wouldn’t. I don’t understand.”

Morgan’s expression didn’t change. “There’s unrest with the fae, and he’s needed. He didn’t have time to tell you.”

I saw him, right here. We spoke. He could have told me then. “How long will he be gone?”

“I’m not sure, I’m sorry. I wish I could tell you more.”

“Who was she? The female, tell me, Morgan.”

His gaze slid from me. “A warrior. She’ll be accompanying him.”

Why wouldn’t he look me in the eyes? He was lying to me. “What about his brothers, are they going with him?”
