The man behind the desk is watching me.
Not the assistant.
Me.
I understand then.
The tablet was never going to matter.
Neither were the cameras.
Neither was Marta.
The assistant’s shoe moves once more.
Then it stops.
The man behind the desk reaches for his phone.
“There will be a delay,” he says when someone answers.
He listens.
“No. Continue without me.”
A sob climbs my throat. I swallow it hard enough to hurt. They have already gotten enough from me.
The guard opens the door and speaks to someone outside.
Two men come in. One takes the assistant beneath the arms. The other takes his legs.
They carry him out.
The man behind the desk ends his call.
He waits until the door closes.
“Now tell me who the fuck Reid is.”
CHAPTER 46
EMMA
Who knew it could take five to seven increasingly bad days to ruin your life?
Turns out, six will do.
“Who the fuck is Reid?” he asks again.
Finally.
Someone wants to hear about my not-dead husband.
Under better circumstances, I would be delighted.
“Reid is my husband.”
The man sets down his phone.
