“And after you killed your employee in front of her, you expected Emma to become more cooperative.”
“She knows where Adams is.”
“You don’t know that.”
“She knows him.”
“Apparently better than either of us realized.”
“She called him Reid.”
“I’m aware.”
“Who is Reid?”
That answer can wait.
“What did Emma tell you?”
“Nothing useful.”
“So not a very productive evening, then.”
“She cannot be allowed to leave Portugal.”
“She has already left your house once under considerably more supervision than I would have recommended.”
“She knows too much.”
“She knew very little when she arrived. You have worked diligently to correct that.”
“And my painting?”
Someone speaks near him. Portuguese. Urgent.
He covers the receiver badly.
When he comes back, his voice has lost some of its certainty.
“What are you proposing we do about my painting?”
“That you do nothing.”
“He stole from me.”
“Then find him.”
“And Calloway?”
“Leave that to me.”
“She can identify this house.”
“She was invited to it.”
“If you send anyone after Emma again,” I say, “I will assume you have decided to make this problem larger.”
“You don’t give me orders.”
