CHAPTER 32
EMMA
Istop in front of him. “How long have you known I was on this flight?”
“Since you started walking toward me.”
“You don’t look surprised.”
He shrugs. “You followed me to Lisbon once already.”
“Did you refer a family to my house?”
“No.”
“Did you know they requested me?”
“No.”
The answers come without hesitation.
“If I wanted you back in Lisbon,” he says, “I wouldn’t need to invent a family.”
“Then we should both be pleased I’m going for work.”
He slips his phone into his coat pocket and stands.
“Where are you staying?”
“At a hotel.”
“Which one?”

I move my suitcase between us and ignore his question.
“So you’re still angry, then?”
I look past him for an empty seat, the further away, the better.
“I thought we left things reasonably well.”
“I woke up alone. I can see how that would improve your experience.”
“You could have stayed.”
“I had a job to get back to. You may remember it. You turned up and pretended to be a client.”
“I am a client.”
“What are you buying?”
He smiles. “Is that what it takes to get your attention?”
“You have my attention. My boss has questions. I’m the one expected to answer them.”
