A phone rang.
Every person in the room went still.
The sound wasn’t coming from Evan.
It was mine.
I pulled it from my pocket and looked at the screen.
CAPTAIN ROBERT MILLS.
Evan’s older brother.
My commanding officer in Dallas.
Evan saw the name.
Something passed between us.
Recognition.
Then relief.
“Answer it,” he said.
I looked at him. “Why?”
“It’s your captain.”
“You knew he was calling?”
“No.”
But he answered too quickly.
The phone continued to ring.
Mace moved close enough that his arm brushed mine. Heat rushed through me, sharp and unwanted in the middle of a confrontation.
Except it wasn’t unwanted.
That was the problem.
“Put it on speaker,” he murmured.
I accepted the call.
“Captain.”
“Judy.” Robert Mills’s voice filled the room. “I need you to stop whatever you’re doing and listen carefully.”
Evan stared at the phone.
“What happened?” I asked.
“I received a call from Eagle River.”
“From whom?”
