Judy continued.
“Someone searched your evidence room tonight.”
“Robert is in Washington.”
“Which means he isn’t working alone.”
The truth hit all of us.
Evan Mills.
His brother.
The man who had known we were searching Sheriff Tate’s house.
The man whose father had been sheriff when Emily died.
Mace looked at Judy.
“The Mills family.”
She nodded slowly.
“Maybe not all of them.”
“But enough.”
Elizabeth’s voice returned through the phone.
“There’s something you don’t know.”
Judy leaned closer.
“What?”
“Robert Mills wasn’t the man who came to Cabin Nine.”
Sheriff Tate frowned.
“What did she say?”
Judy raised her hand.
“Elizabeth, are you certain?”
“I’ll never forget that face.”
“Then why did Robert come to your office?”
“Because he wanted to know what I remembered.”
“What do you remember?”
The line went quiet.
Then Elizabeth whispered,
“I saw Emily arguing with the old sheriff.”
