“He lied.”
A sharp sound broke through the phone.
Glass shattering.
Elizabeth screamed.
“Get down!” Judy shouted.
The call filled with movement.
Something crashed.
A man cursed in the distance.
Then barking erupted.
Loud.
Furious.
Elizabeth cried out.
The phone struck the floor.
Mace grabbed Judy’s shoulder.
“Elizabeth!”
No answer.
Only the sound of a struggle.
Collins pressed his phone to his ear.
“Spokane police are six minutes out.”
Judy shouted into the speaker.
“Elizabeth, get to a locked room!”
A gunshot exploded through the line.
The Magnolia Ladies cried out.
Mace’s blood turned cold.
Then a man’s voice came through the speaker.
Calm.
Close.
“Emily should’ve minded her own damn business.”
Judy went perfectly still.
“Evan.”
