“He loved Claire.”
“I know.”
“He worshipped that little girl.”
“I know.”
Doc keeps staring at me.
Maybe he hears something in my voice.
Maybe I'm imagining it.
I close the laptop.
Nathan and Claire were married for eleven years.
I was there the day they met.
Nathan saw her across a crowded restaurant and forgot what the hell he was saying in the middle of a sentence.
I laughed at him for months.
Then he married her.
I stood beside him.
A few years later, he called me from the hospital and cried so hard I couldn't understand half of what he was saying.
He was holding his daughter for the first time.
Nathan Donovan loved two people more than life itself.
Claire.
And their little girl.
That’s why I know he didn’t fall asleep behind the wheel.
Nathan would have crawled through hell to get home to them.
“You think somebody killed him,” Doc says.
“Yes.”
“You've thought that for two years.”
“Yes.”
“And now somebody is digging into his military records.”
“Yes.”
Doc looks toward the window.
“You tell Claire?”
“No.”
