Our eyes met again.
Then the door closed.
Trigger appeared beside me.
“You dated her.”
“A few times.”
“She’s pretty.”
Rylie slapped his arm.
“Professionally pretty,” he corrected.
“That isn’t better.”
Wolf watched the closed door.
“She started to say seven.”
“I heard.”
Sheriff Tate stood near the entrance to the back room.
His expression told me he had heard it too.
I looked at him.
“Seven what?”
“I can’t discuss an active investigation.”
“Is Eagle River in danger?”
“We don’t know.”
“That means maybe.”
“It means we don’t know.”
Wolf crossed his arms.
“If there’s a threat to this town, we need to know.”
Tate released a slow breath.
“I’ll tell you what I can after I speak with the detectives.”
He entered the back room and closed the door.
Rylie looked at me.
“Did Judy tell you why she became a homicide detective?”
“She was seventeen the last time I saw her.”
“You didn’t ask what she wanted to do?”
