The Rangers moved.
No questions.
No hesitation.
Years had passed since we worked together, but the rhythm remained.
A command.
An acknowledgment.
Action.
Wolf looked at me.
“With me.”
I followed him into the dining room.
Max stayed beside Rylie.
He didn’t need to be told.
Clearing the Last Stand Tavern took twelve minutes.
The Magnolia Ladies refused to leave.
Agnes crossed her arms.
“We know something is wrong.”
“The plumbing,” Nora said.
“There is nothing wrong with your plumbing,” Mabel answered. “I used the restroom ten minutes ago.”
Trigger closed his eyes.
June looked toward the back room.
“Is Rylie in trouble?”
“No,” Wolf said.
All three women stared at him.
Wolf had faced enemy interrogators who were less frightening.
Agnes pointed at a table.
“We’ll sit here until someone tells us the truth.”
“You need to go home,” Sheriff Tate said.
Mabel looked at him.
“You used to run through my flower beds when you were eight years old Kevin Tate. Do not use that sheriff voice with me.”
I learned two things in the next five seconds.
