Epilogue

Emily

Two weeks later, I marry the Devil.

Sally is furious.

Not about the marriage.

About the timeline.

“I had plans,” she hisses while adjusting my veil for the fourth time. “There were going to be peonies.”

“There are flowers.”

“Those are roses.”

“They’re white.”

“That isn’t the point.”

I catch Margie’s eye across the room.

“Help me.”

“No.” Margie smiles. “I told her you’d elope if she pushed too hard.”

“We didn’t elope.”

Sally points toward the window.

“Forty-two people and a ceremony planned in eleven days is basically an elopement.”

It would have been ten days, but Caleb lost the argument.

He wanted to marry me the morning after he proposed.

I couldn’t tell if he was joking.

I’m still not sure.

He ended up flying back to Portland with me and helping me pack up my apartment. What was supposed to be a few weeks, turned into a two-day trip before we were back in Devil’s Peak planning this wedding.

“You ready?” His voice comes from the doorway.

Sally spins. “You can’t be in here!”

Caleb ignores her.

His eyes find mine.

Then slowly move down.

I’m wearing a simple silk dress with thin straps and a low back. Nothing elaborate. Nothing resembling the enormous wedding dress Sally tried to convince me to order.

Caleb’s jaw tightens.

Sally notices.
