Unable to help myself, I leaned forward until my lips gently brushed against her cheek. After the third kiss, she began to stir from her sleep. Her long lashes fluttered open, making way for her big and beautiful brown eyes. “Good morning, beautiful. You even wake up pretty.”

She lifted the covers over her face to hide a smile. “Ain’t no way you’re starting with the sweet words already. I just woke up.”

“You deserve to start your day with sweetness though. How else am I supposed to do my part to make sure you have a good day?”

She slowly lowered the sheet so I could see her. There was hesitation in her eyes, and I watched her gulp down a huge gust of air before she ever thought of replying. I began to brush her hair from her face, unable to stop admiring her. My lips found hers, and the soft pecks I gave her lit a fire in my core.

“What are we doing, Kaizi?” Her voice was tiny yet heavy from questions she had to find courage to ask.

I continued to kiss all over her face until my nose found a home in the crook of her neck. I inhaled her natural scent, wanting to download it to memory. “What do you mean by that?”

She sat up quickly, forcing me to release her. I tucked my arms behind my head as I looked up at her perfect, naked body. “You know what I mean. I’m not trying to be some little fling to entertain you and get your mind off your breakup with Tycelyn until you’re ready to get back with her or some other bitch.”

My head jerked back as I processed her words. “Where the fuck you pull that from? Who is thinking about getting back with Tycelyn? I told you I’m done with that, and I mean it. All my attention is on you, Chai. There’s no one else. Come here.”

I reached for her hand, but she snatched away to fold her arms over her chest instead. Sitting up, I softly dragged my teeth across her shoulder. “You don’t believe me?” She barely let me finish getting the question out before she was shaking her head. I chuckled with a sigh. “What would it take for you to believe me when I say I don’t see you as a fling nor am I trying to take advantage of you? Waking up next to you made this one of the best mornings I’ve ever had.”

She sat silently, allowing my words to sink in. I thought she would melt into me, but instead, she snatched the cover from off her legs and hopped up. I watched her wrap the sheet around her naked body to hide herself from me. “If you’re serious about me, then prove it, and I shouldn’t have to tell you how. Figure it out.”

Her words were sharp, but I never allowed them to penetrate my heart as an offense. She was protecting herself, and she wasn’t wrong about it. It wasn’t my intention to cross this line with her so soon, but last night, I was so captivated by the peace radiating from her pores while she played her violin. Nothing could’ve stopped me from crossing the floor to invade her personal space, because the wine only intensified my desires. Now that I’d tasted and felt her, if she needed assurance of where she stood in my life, I was going to figure out what it would take to give it to her.

Being in bed wasn’t nearly as relaxing without her in it, so I got my ass up. While I handled my hygiene all I could think about was my Chai Rose. I didn’t know when the fuck she got my nose so wide open, but I was already a lost cause. When I walked in the kitchen to find her cooking breakfast, I leaned against the wall simply content with watching her move around my home with ease.

“I’m going out for a bit before I have to head to conditioning. Do you need anything?” I questioned after staring at her for longer than a sane person would.

When she turned to look at me, my heart stuttered in my chest. Walking over to her, I wrapped an arm around her waist before snatching her closer. “Kaizi, what are you doing?” she asked with an attitude she wasn’t even fully committed to.

I rocked our bodies from side to side, ignoring her, because I was going to figure out what it would take to put a smile on her face. Eventually, she began to melt in my arms, and we continued to dance to a silent song only heard by our souls. We stared deeply into one another’s eyes and ended up smiling at the same time. “Just admiring you is all. I’ll be back.”

Even though I wanted to kiss her more than I wanted to walk out of the door, I released her without doing anything more. Chai wanted to feel respected, and she was right. I had no business crossing lines with her without being clear about my intentions. Backing away, I had to force myself to turn and leave because the desire to stay was strong.

Snatching the keys for my Corvette off the wall, I headed out the door and hopped inside. I wasted no time cranking up and jetting off in the direction of my parents’ home. When I arrived, I saw both of my parents were home. Using my key, I let myself in and was greeted by the sweet aroma of a roseberry pie.

“Where y’all at?” I called out to save myself from having to walk room to room.

“Juvi, we in the kitchen,” my father called out a second later.

I headed in that direction knowing that I should’ve followed the scent of that pie in the first place. When I entered the kitchen, I found my mother placing a slice of roseberry pie in front of my father on top of a bowl of vanilla bean ice cream. The sight made me a little jealous because I knew it was good.

“Wassup, family. Y’all missed me?” I greeted the two of them while heading for my mother to place a kiss on her cheek.

“Of course we did. You want a slice of pie?” she asked, doing what she did best, catering to me.

I nodded excitedly. “Yes, ma’am.” Wasn’t no point in beating around the bush about it. I wanted that pie, and I wanted it now. I felt the heat of my father’s eyes on me, so I turned to give him my attention. “What? You don’t want to share your pie with me, old man?” I teased him with a bump to the shoulder.

He mugged me with a shake of his head. “Damn right. She already made you one to take home, why you gotta come begging for mine too?”

I chuckled heartily. “My bad, man. I ain’t know she did all that.”

He waved me off to return his attention to his pie. “Oh, please. You know my lady only knows how to spoil your ass. You need your own woman so you can stop trying to hog mine.”

Since he’d brought up the topic, I decided to ask him for some advice. My father was happily married and had been for nearly thirty years. He would know a thing or two about matters of the heart, and there was no other male figure in my life I trusted more than the man who helped bring me into this world. He might’ve got joy from teasing me, but he’d go to war for me. I knew that without a doubt.

“In your opinion, would I be moving too fast if I asked Chai to be my girlfriend?” I blurted out, catching him off guard.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw my mama pause what she was doing after my question. But after a second, she chose to keep quiet and continued about her task of making me a pie sundae too. My father turned toward me, and I could feel his eyes studying me. I kept steady eye contact so he would know this was a serious conversation to me, and I needed him to bestow some wisdom.

“Have you really thought about it? I know you didn’t open your home to take advantage of her situation like that, right?”
