“Sit. This will be quick, and then we will go to the courts. Pete should be here any minute,” Latham says, sitting behind his desk.

My son lies comfortably in his arms. He grabs a tablet with one hand, and the door swings open. A woman in a lab coat trots in, carrying a small tray in her hand.

“Smile,” Latham says, and I’m about to ask him what for when I see a flash. He smirks, and I see the camera behind his head, my picture popping up on the tablet. I glare at him and the terrible photo he took with my mouth half-open.

“Fill in her details and your son’s,” Latham says, handing the tablet to Eli. He sits in the chair beside me, typing in my name and our son’s details.

“Here, Cyrus, you can take Eason back. I hate this part,” Latham says, passing my son to Cyrus.

“What part?” I ask, panicking. I stand, wondering what they are about to do.

Eli tugs me down on his lap before handing the tablet back to Latham.

“They need his blood for the database, just a prick,” Eli says, his arms tightening around my waist, and our son suddenly screams.

I growl, but Eli holds me tighter as the woman squeezes his heel and takes a sample. Cyrus’s jaw is clenched, while I glare at her. She’s quick, and Cyrus quickly soothes him as she turns to my next.

“I’ll get hers. Go, Darcy, before she bites,” Latham says, and I turn my glare on him as he gets up, strutting around his desk. He takes a needle from her and a vial and takes my arm as she walks out.

“Why do you need my blood?”

He jabs the needle in my arm, making me flinch.

“Just DNA filing. Also, to keep track of species,” he says, pulling the needle from my arm. He licks where he’s jabbed me.

I jerk my arm away from him, and he smiles.

“She tastes as good as she smells.”

“Was that necessary?” Eli snaps at him.

“What? I was curious.”

“Curious how I tasted?” I shake my head.

“No, he can see glimpses of your past by drinking your blood.”

“What else can demons do?”

“Question is, what can’t we do?” Latham says, picking up the tablet again. He scans the barcode on the vial then pops it in the fridge behind him.

“Adeline Colten has a ring to it,” Latham says.

I look at Eli.

“You will be changing it from Paisley. Figured I might as well change it since we’re here.”

“What if I wanted to keep my name?” I tease him.

“Are you saying you won’t be marrying us, Addie? Because you don’t have a choice. You are ours,” Eli says.

I smile.

“Okay, handprint,” Latham says, pushing the tablet toward me.

He taps the screen, and I place my hand on it. The screen lights up as it scans my hand and then repeats it with the other one. As I pull my hand off, Latham reaches over the desk, plucking a piece of my hair. I slap his hand.

“You are very handsy,” I tell him as he puts my strands in a long tube before putting the lid on it.
