“Everything okay?” His voice was thick with sleep.
“Yes.”
He hummed softly and settled again. After a moment, his hand drifted across my chest and rested over my heart, as if it belonged there.
That’s because it does.
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Quinn
As I reached the main door to Obsidian, my phone buzzed.
Max: Where are you? I’ve been here an hour already.
I grinned as I typed, my thumbs sliding over the screen.
If you’d waited 30 seconds before messaging, you’d have seen me walk through the door. And I’m sorry, but I had stuff to do after work. Boring things like shopping, laundry, cleaning… Stuff I haven’t been able to do cos there’s this guy who’s been taking up all my time.
Get your arse in here and save me. There’s a Dom trying hard to bore me to death.
I laughed and typed fast. Quinn to the rescue. Good thing I brought my superhero cape. I pocketed my phone and pushed the door open.
Arron greeted me warmly from behind the desk. “He’s in there.”
I grinned. “Yeah, I know.”
He smirked. “Has your arse recovered from last night? The word around the club is it took quite a pounding.” His eyes gleamed. “I might have to get me one of those machines for the nights when I get bored with just my hand.”
I guffawed. “Take out shares in lube if you do.” I stepped through the wide doors.
Obsidian felt different tonight.
Or maybe that’s just me.
Twenty-four hours ago, I’d walked out of here riding the kind of high that only a really good scene could give you, a mixture of adrenaline and endorphins.
Except my evening had gotten bigger. It had gone from being a scene, to being two men in the same bed, learning each other in a different way.
Heat crept up my neck at the recollection. Somehow that was the part of the whole night that had left me the most unsettled.
Maybe this feeling of something being altered was nothing to do with the club.
Maybe it was all to do with Max.
I couldn’t see him. I leaned against the wall for a moment, watching the room the way I had that first night. Except I wasn’t the same guy anymore.
Last night had changed something between us. Not the dynamic. That part was still there, solid and steady. If anything, it felt stronger now. The scene we’d done had pushed me harder than anything before, and the fact that I’d trusted Max enough to safe word instead of driving myself past my limit still gave me a warm feeling.
He was proud of me.
It wasn’t the scene that kept replaying in my head, however, but the quiet conversation about Jordan that had come afterwards. The way Max had looked at me, as though he was trying to understand how we’d ended up somewhere that didn’t fit inside his carefully constructed rules.
I remembered other things too. The warmth of his body beside mine. The way he’d let me see parts of him he usually kept hidden behind that calm, controlled exterior.
And somewhere in the middle of all that, a thought had slipped quietly into my head and refused to leave.
I think I’m in love with him.
