“Yes.” No drama, just the plain unvarnished truth.
Maya’s expression softened. “That’s new.”
“I know.” That was also true.
“Is it just the dynamic?” Sam asked gently. “Or—”
“It’s him,” I said, too fast. They all looked at me. I blinked. “I mean. Yeah. It’s him.”
Maya leaned in. “How?”
I frowned, searching for it. “He’s… steady,” I said. “Like he actually means it. Not just the scene. The way he talks. He doesn’t rush. He doesn’t show off.”
Jess tilted her head. “That’s it?”
I shrugged, a little defensive. “I don’t know. It just feels different. Like he’s not trying to win.”
Jess nodded slowly. “Ah.”
“What does ah mean?” I demanded.
“That’s not just about the scene,” she said. I blinked, and she smiled. “I read stuff, okay? You’re talking about more than the kink.”
She wasn’t wrong. The scene had been good. Structured, exactly what I’d wanted. But what stuck with me wasn’t the restraints or the pacing.
It was afterwards.
The quiet. The way he’d looked at me. The way it hadn’t felt rushed. It didn’t feel like something I’d just dropped into for an hour.
It felt solid.
And yeah, I wanted more of that.
“I think I’m going back on Thursday,” I said, before I could overthink it.
Maya leaned against the counter. “Do you normally go on a Thursday?”
“No,” I admitted. “But I think he might.”
Sam grinned. “We love a calculated risk.”
“It’s not a risk,” I said. “It’s probability.”
Jess laughed. “This is getting interesting.”
“I don’t know that it’s anything right now,” I said quickly.
“But you hope it is.” Maya gazed at me with warm eyes.
I didn’t deny it, because I didn’t need to. This was a safe space.
Grant had acted like if I was there, I was his. Closeness came with weight.
Max didn’t do that. He simply looked at me as though I mattered. With him, it felt lighter, as if I got to choose it.
“Sorry there’s no rice,” Maya said as she carried whatever concoction she’d created towards the dining table. I winced. “But I did make bread rolls this afternoon, so have some of those.”
I joined Sam and Jess at the table, and Maya passed me a bowl. “Thursday, then.”
