“I found stuff online,” I said. “Porn, yeah, but then forums. People arguing about consent and rules like it was serious. I stayed for that part.” I rubbed the back of my neck. “That was the first time I thought… oh. This isn’t a phase. This is just how I’m wired.”

There was a pause, but it didn’t feel awkward.

Max’s fingers stilled around his mug. “You started with reading?”

“Yeah.” I blinked at him. “Why?”

Another pause. His expression had shifted. He wasn’t guarded, not exactly, but he was sharper, as if he was recalibrating something.

“That’s how I started,” he said at last.

I blinked again. “With porn?”

He let out a faint huff of amusement. “With language.”

Oh.

“I didn’t fall into it,” he continued. “I studied it first. Ethics. Structure. Negotiation frameworks.” His mouth twitched. “I treated it like a syllabus.”

I stared at him. “You made a kink curriculum?”

He shrugged. “It seemed responsible.”

I couldn’t help it. I laughed. “That is the most you thing I’ve ever heard.”

He didn’t smile properly, but something in his shoulders eased.

“I didn’t want to hurt anyone.” His voice was quieter now. “And I didn’t want to step into something I didn’t understand.”

Okay, that hit hard.

“Yeah,” I said softly. “Same.”

Max and me, we weren’t identical. We weren’t even mirror images of each other.

But we were aligned, and that felt right. Better than right.

It felt good.

Max studied me for a long moment, and there was something different in his gaze now, as though there was less assessment and more recognition.

“You weren’t guessing,” he said.

“No.”

“You knew what you were asking for.”

“Yes.”

The silence that fell wasn’t heavy, but steady.

Max nodded once, almost to himself. “That changes things,” he murmured.

My pulse picked up. “How?”

His eyes met mine fully.

“It means you’re not submitting out of confusion,” he said. “You’re choosing it.”
