“We met in foster care,” Finn chimed in, pulling on his ear. I nodded, remembering that much from what Adrian had said earlier. “We definitely weren’t friends at first, though.”
“Kincaid and I went to the same boarding school,” Julian added. “Oliver was there, too, and he met Kincaid through the music program. I guess that’s when we started being friends.”
I shook my head. Of course Noah had gone to boarding school.
“Did you guys go to boarding school, too?” I asked the twins and Finn, unable to stop my eyes from lingering on Rafe a little longer. Boarding school was the last place I could picture his charming personality.
He scowled back, proving me right. “Hell no.”
Adrian leaned forward in his chair, planting both elbows on his knees. “We didn’t all join up until afterwards.”
“Rian,” Rafe said warningly, cutting a look at his twin. I frowned. Join what?
Finn sighed from my other side, leaning around me to get a better view of Rafe. “We can tell her some stuff, can’t we? I’m not made for keeping secrets.”
“That’s literally your job.”
Finn made a face back at him.
“Secrets are your job?” I asked, and Rafe groaned.
Finn smiled victoriously. “Rafe blabbed! That wasn’t even me. I take no fault here.”
“What does that mean?” I pressed, facing Finn. “How is your job about keeping secrets?”
When Finn opened his mouth, Julian jumped in. “I know there’s a lot of distrust between us right now, but let’s stay focused.” He turned to me. “Emma, I need you to tell me what Kincaid told you about his job.”
I chewed on my lip, hesitating. The last thing I wanted to do was reveal information that’d convince them Noah was lying to me. That’d just give Rafe more ammunition.
But I also needed answers.
I sighed, pulling my feet up onto the couch and hugging my knees. “He said he was a financial consultant who travels a lot for work.”
Julian nodded, looking thoughtful. “Okay. He wasn’t too far off with that, although the financial part is a grey area. But he does travel sometimes.”
“Not as much as he pretended to,” I muttered under my breath.
“Can we tell her?” Finn asked hopefully, folding his hands together. “Please? She’s trustworthy, I swear.”
“You didn’t even know her name before yesterday, Finn.” Rafe’s glare turned glacial, and I could swear the temperature in the room dropped. “No, you know the rules. We don’t tell her anything.”
Finn frowned. “Why not?”
I silently echoed the sentiment.
Rafe raised a thick eyebrow. “Because while Kincaid is unreachable, I’m in charge.”
“In charge?” I asked, rubbing at my stomach when it growled. Now was not the time to whine about food—not when I was so close to getting answers. “In charge of what?”
“Us,” Adrian answered simply, which did nothing to help my confusion.
He was in charge of them?
“Don’t say any more.” Rafe’s tone left no room for argument. “She doesn’t have clearance.”
Clearance?
Okay, this was officially getting weird.
