“What?” Haunt asked.

“John Sage killed her, and he haunts this castle. If they cross paths…” Reaver didn’t finish.

“Just when you think it can’t get any worse,” I quipped.

“Let’s hope our luck holds and they don’t,” Haunt said.

Gizmo snorted. “Since when has that happened?”

We all exchanged grim looks. Of course, that would happen. Fuck!

“Okay, message Evie; see if she knows what paranormal group this was that left this. If we have their names, we can dig and find out if they’re occultists,” Haunt ordered Reaver. “The rest of us, get ready; we’ve an exorcism to prepare for.”

“I might have a solution,” Cammie said. “Let me make some phone calls.”

“If you’ve got something, chase it, because right now we need the Ghostbusters,” Haunt replied, shaking his head.

“That or a damn miracle. La Llorona is growing stronger. We’ve days before she realises she’s strong enough to kill. We gotta get this resolved by then,” I stated.

Haunt met my gaze. “We ain’t failed yet.”

I hated to say it, but the words left my lips. “There’s always a first time.” I let Haunt see the fear in my eyes. La Llorona was more powerful than the demon, and for once, I welcomed an exorcism. It said something when I’d rather battle a demon than a spirit.

“We should warn Evie and the family. If they see La Llorona, get somewhere safe,” Reaver said.

“Is there anywhere safe?” Gizmo barked.

“Well, getting away from falling axes would be a great start.” Dive smirked.

“Can’t argue there.”

Unease washed over me. Something was about to happen, and I swivelled my head.

“What?” Haunt demanded, catching me.

“Don’t know, but I’m uneasy,” I murmured.

“Get salt across that door,” Ghoul ordered, alarmed.

Reaver moved before anyone could and laid out a line of salt. The door blew open to the tearoom, and a wind howled through it.

We placed ourselves in front of the women and the monitors. A moan raced through Chillingham Castle, agonised yet cruel.

“Any sign of anything?” Haunt asked Dive, who studied the cameras.

“Not outside, no,” Dive said and continued checking.

“You know what’s weird?” I muttered.

“What?” Haunt turned to me.

“This was once the heart of the Castle—the kitchen. But no spirits remain here. Why?”

“Good question. Maybe because the dungeon is underneath?” Lich suggested.

“Perhaps. But it’s strange,” I replied. Reaver wrestled the door shut as we swapped glances.

“Something is coming,” Ghoul murmured.
