“There’s a place around the corner I’ve been meaning to try.”
The bookstore suddenly seemed louder around us even though nothing had changed. The espresso machine hissed behind Naomi, someone turned a page near the front window, and the bell above the door chimed as another customer walked in. They were all normal Wednesday morning sounds, but somehow I was aware of every single one of them.
Maybe because, for the first time since Ellis walked through the door that morning, whatever was happening between us had nothing to do with pictures, the website, or Open Mic Night. He’d gotten everything he needed, and there wasn’t anything left for us to discuss that couldn’t wait.
I looked at Ellis.
“Are you asking me to get breakfast with you?”
“Technically, I think we’re getting close to brunch.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
His mouth curved.
“Yeah, Luna. I’m asking if you want to eat with me.”
I should’ve checked what needed to be done.
Asked Naomi if she could handle things for a little while.
Looked at the schedule.
Found at least one practical reason to think about it first.
Instead, I looked toward the café.
Naomi was steaming milk with her back to us.
I knew without asking that she’d be fine.
I looked back at Ellis.
“Okay.”
“Okay?”
“You asked.”
“I did.”
“And I said yes.”
His smile came slowly.
“Then I guess we’re getting breakfast.”
“Brunch,” I corrected.
“Now you care?”
“Words matter.”
He laughed.
“Give me ten minutes.”
“I’ll wait.”
