Come get her then.
Later.
Oh I know. You got plans.
I stared at the message until another one came through.
I locked my phone and headed down the hall without answering. Whatever she was fishing for, she could keep fishing.
I made it halfway to the kitchen before my phone buzzed again.
Don’t ignore me.
I did exactly that, which lasted all of ten seconds before she called.
Of course she did.
I answered as I stepped into the kitchen. “What?”
“That’s how you answer the phone?”
“When I know it’s you? Yeah.”
Tasha sucked her teeth. “Anyway. Where you going?”
“Good morning to you too.”
“It was good before you started being difficult.”
I opened the refrigerator and reached for a bottle of water. “Didn’t you call me?”
“Because you ignored my question.”
“I didn’t ignore it.”
“You didn’t answer.”
“Same difference.”
“No, it’s not.”
I twisted the cap off the bottle and took a drink.
“Is Mila good?”
“My niece is wonderful.”
“Your niece?”
“For now. She becomes your daughter again when school lets out.”
I laughed. “You still good to drop her off this morning?”
“Already planned on it. I got her.”
“Appreciate you.”
“Mm-hmm.” There was a brief pause. “So who you going to breakfast with?”
