“You’ve been looking at the same page for five minutes.”

“There are options.”

“It’s breakfast.”

She looked up from the menu. “And?”

“Eggs. Meat. Something made out of potatoes.”

“That’s why I don’t know what I want. Everything sounds good.”

She turned the page like she might find an answer on the other side. I leaned back against the booth, watching her scan a list she’d probably already read twice.

“Get what you usually get.”

“I don’t usually go out for breakfast.”

That caught my attention. “No?”

She shook her head. “Not really. If I eat before work, it’s usually something quick at home or whatever Naomi shows up with.”

“What does Naomi show up with?”

“Depends on how late she is.”

I laughed. “Her apology comes with food?”

“Sometimes coffee. The later she is, the better the offering.”

“That’s a solid system.”

“For her.”

The waitress returned with our drinks, and Luna thanked her before wrapping both hands around her glass.

“What about you?” she asked.

“What about me?”

“You do breakfast dates often?”

I looked at her.

She took a slow sip of orange juice like the question was completely innocent.

“No.”

“How often is not often?”

“Luna.”

“What?” Her eyes widened. “I’m making conversation.”

“You’re being nosy.”

“I can be two things.”

I laughed because I’d heard that somewhere before.
