“You disappeared on me for a minute.”

“I was thinking.”

“About?”

I glanced at our hands before looking at him again.

“Sunday.”

His expression softened. “You nervous?”

“A little.”

“Want me to say no?”

“No.”

The answer came out so quickly that he laughed.

I did too.

“Okay then.”

“Okay.”

He squeezed my hand once before settling back into his chair, and the conversation moved on to something else.

I didn’t remember what.

For once, I wasn’t trying to figure out what any of this would look like three months from now.

Sunday was enough.

Dinner with my parents. Ellis. Mila.

And when I pictured all of us sitting around the same table, I didn’t feel the urge to take the invitation back.

I just wanted them there.

I checked the time for the third time in less than five minutes.

Plenty of time.

Luna told me to be at her parents’ house at four, and according to the directions she sent, the drive should take twelve minutes. Fifteen if I caught every light between here and there.

Which meant there was absolutely no reason for me to be standing in my kitchen trying to decide whether showing up empty-handed to Sunday dinner was rude.

I looked at the bottle of wine sitting on the counter, then at the dessert I picked up earlier.

Maybe both was too much.

Maybe the dessert was enough.

I reached for the wine, changed my mind, then set it back down.

“Daddy?”
