Darkness settled over Chapter & Charm.

I followed her outside.

She locked the door behind us and checked it once before slipping her keys into her bag.

“You ready?” I asked.

Luna looked at me.

There was something in her expression I hadn’t seen before.

Nerves, maybe.

But not doubt.

“Yeah.”

I believed her.

“Lead the way.”

By the time I pulled in behind Luna, her porch light was already on.

I turned off the truck and sat there for a second, trying very hard not to get ahead of myself.

Luna was waiting near her front door when I walked up.

“You coming in?”

“I drove all the way over here.”

“You followed me ten minutes.”

“Still counts.”

She unlocked the door.

I followed her inside.

I’d been here before, but tonight the house felt different.

Or maybe I did.

Luna dropped her bag onto the table near the door and slipped out of her shoes.

“You want something to drink?”

“Sure.”

“What do you want?”

“Water’s fine.”

She headed toward the kitchen.

I watched her go.

Then immediately told myself to stop watching her go.
