Mila appeared first.

“Miss Luna!”

I barely had time to smile before she ran toward me and wrapped both arms around my waist.

“Hey, girl.”

“I went bowling.”

“I heard you had plans with Auntie and Jacob.”

“I got a strike.”

Ellis appeared in the doorway.

“She got a spare.”

Mila turned around. “It was almost a strike.”

“That’s not how bowling works.”

“I knocked all of them down.”

“After you got a second turn.”

She looked up at me. “He’s being technical.”

“Sounds like it.”

I looked at him.

Which made me remember last night.

Not where my mind needed to be while his six-year-old was still holding my hand.

“Hi,” he said.

“Hi.”

“I saw you this morning.”

“You could’ve kept that part to yourself.”

Mila looked between us. “You did?”

“Your daddy came over for coffee.”

Not technically a lie.
