He answered before the second ring finished.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

“You leaving?”

“Walking to my car now.”

“Good.”

I smiled as I unlocked the door. “Were you waiting?”

“I told you to call.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“It was enough of an answer.”

I laughed as I slid behind the wheel and set my bag on the passenger seat.

“What are you doing?”

“Editing.”

“This late?”

“It’s not that late.”

“It’s almost nine.”

“Exactly.”

“That means nothing.”

“It means it’s almost nine.”

I shook my head as I started the car. “Where’s Mila?”

“Asleep.”

“Already?”

“She had a long day.”

“She’s six. Going to school is a long day.”

“You tell her that. According to her, first grade is very demanding.”

I laughed as I pulled my seat belt across my chest.

For a minute, he told me about whatever happened at school that apparently required Mila to spend fifteen minutes explaining why somebody named Caleb was no longer allowed to borrow her crayons. By the time he got to the part where she made him promise not to tell anybody, I was pulling out of the parking lot.

“Wait. If she told you not to tell anybody, why are you telling me?”

“You don’t count.”

“I don’t know if I should be offended.”
